Here it is, the
giant leopard moth (
Hypercompe scribonia), hiding from the rain last weekend under the lip of our recycling container. Beautiful.
The fuzzy black caterpillars of this moth are constant companions in the garden. I've seen bits of wings of adults, but never seen one living and breathing through its spiracles.

Right after I read your entry about the moth, my boyfriend brought in one from where he was out working. He says they called them Christmas moths when he were young and living in San Antonio. Thanks for the info! (Had to edit it sorry)
