Eryngo (Eryngium leavenworthii) is another one of those Texas natives that is spiky, but gorgeous. I've never seen it growing in the wild, but it's turning roadsides and fields purple all across the Edward's Plateau right now. Look for it from Lampasas to Abilene. Very beautiful.
There's a related plant native to the Blackland prairie called rattlesnake master, Eryngium yuccifolium. Rattlesnake master ranges all the way up to Wisconsin prairies and we had it planted in our yard there. It would be great to find a local source for the plant around here.

I just admired eryngo at the Wildflower Center on Sunday. They are stunning at this time of year. If you do find a local source, please let me know. I'd love to give them a try too.

This is a so beautiful plants and I am so fascinated by these Erngiums. I can still remember when I saw my very first one in a gorgeous garden.
