Part and parcel to the front garden project, we've been desiring some big dark screening plants to enclose the front sitting area. I finally landed on Japanese loquat (I've also heard it called Chinese plum).
These are really nice, shade tolerant trees with deep dark olive colored leaves that are big and tropical. That's what we needed. The loquats' nice dark big-leaves will provide much needed contrast to all the bright green tiny-leaved things that grow best around Central Texas.
A huge bonus is that the loquats produce sweet smelling, pale cream flowers in December - when flowers are needed most. The bees love those flowers and the sweet orange fruit that comes in Spring is equally delightful. (Here's a great breakfast recipe using loquats.)
We're already enjoying a feeling a privacy and tropicalia from these trees...

We must have just missed the planting of these beauties when we visited. Your yard is certainly lovely.
Are these bush types. I have seen these as huge trees in a neighbors garden.

Hey J @ LR - These are the tree types. But they do look so bushy now. I'm hoping they will grow tall and dense and create a big dark wall. That ash they are under will come down some day...just trying to plan for the succession...
